StarCraft : The Crafted Stars
In 2009, One of the best selling games for the personal computer, StarCraft, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, released in March, 1998. StarCraft is a military science fiction real-time strategy video game. StarCraft has had its storyline adapted and expanded through a series of novels, the expansion pack StarCraft Brood War and two authorized add-ons. The game’s sequel, StarCarft 2 : Wings of Liberty, was released in 2010. Blizzard Entertainment’s use of three distinct races in StarCraft is widely credited with revolutionizing real-time strategy genre. In 1996, the version of the game displayed received a very weak response from the conventional. Then, Bill Roper, one of the game’s producers, stated that StarCraft would allow players to “develop very unique strategies based on which species (is being played) and will require (players) to think of different strategies to combat to two other species. Now, the new version of StarCraft unveiled and received a far more positive response. Many of the industry’s journalists have praised StarCraft as one of the best and most important video games of all time and for having raised the bar for developing real-time strategy games. StarCraft’s multiplayer is particularly popular in South Korea, where players and teams participate in professional competitions, earn sponsorships and compete in televised tournaments. The musical score to StarCraft was composed by Blizzard Entertainment’s in-house composers, Named, Derek Duke and Glenn Stafford.
The StarCraft series has been a commercial success. After its release, StarCraft became the best selling game for that year, selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide. In the next decade, StarCraft sold over 9.5 million copies across the globe, with 4.5 million of these being sold in South Korea. Since the initial release of StarCraft, Blizzard Entertainment reported that its Battle.net online multiplayer service grew by 800 percent. StarCraft remains one of the most popular online games in the world. After its release, StarCraft rapidly grew in popularity in South Korea, establishing a successful pro-gaming scene. Pro-gamers in South Korea are niche media celebrities and StarCraft games broadcast over three television channels dedicated to gaming. StarCraft has won numerous Game of the Year awards, is often described as one of the best real-time strategy games made and is widely credited with popularizing the use of distinct and unique sides, as opposed to sides of equal ability and strength, in real-time strategy games.
